A mobile video recorder (MVR) is the recorder at the centre of a vehicle camera system. It stores footage from all the vehicle's cameras and sends alerts and live video to a control room. Hikvision's AE-MD5043, for example, records four channels from 1080p cameras onto two 2.5-inch drives (HDD or SSD). It has 4G and Wi-Fi for remote access and offload. GPS data is embedded in the video, and it runs on 9 to 36 V DC, so it suits both cars and heavy vehicles. It also supports AI features such as ADAS, driver monitoring and blind spot detection.
Fleets use MVRs to review incidents, check routes and respond quickly when a driver presses a panic button. When a vehicle returns to the depot, footage can download automatically over Wi-Fi. Transit installs MVRs in a secure, ventilated spot, wires them to ignition and power with proper protection, and connects the mobile cameras. We also set up the fleet platform.
